Riverside Health System will be launching the Riverside Internal Medicine (IM) Physician Residency Program. The categorical, three-year program will offer physicians education, training and guidance on the intricacies of inpatient and outpatient internal medicine and prepare them for success as internists. The applications for the new IM program will be open for the 2024-2025 match cycle.

Internal medicine physicians are trained to help diagnose and treat a broad and comprehensive spectrum of illnesses in acute and outpatient settings. Residencies offer students the ability to practice hands-on medical care for an individual panel of patients under the supervision of an attending licensed physician. The program also offers several interdisciplinary clinical rotations to ensure the student receives a varied clinical experience prior to graduation.

“We are thrilled to be a part of shaping the next generation of health care professionals,” says Kirsten Watkins, program director at Riverside. “As the latest addition to the storied history of Riverside residency programs, we are excited to create and foster an environment for physicians that breeds innovation, collaboration and, above all else, serves the Riverside mission — to care for others as we would care for those we love.”

Riverside Health System offers residents the opportunity to practice medicine with diverse pathology and medically complex patients in a high-volume, high-acuity hospital setting with a dedicated chest pain center and the Peninsula’s only Comprehensive Stroke Center and level II trauma center. The IM program offers provider wellness curriculum, wellness days, an annual retreat and a unique opportunity to influence the culture and character of a residency.

“We remain deeply committed to providing a world-class physician educational experience and ensuring the longevity of qualified health care providers in our community,” says Meredith Hays, D.O., MPH, FACP, internal medicine program director at Riverside Regional Medical Center. “This residency program offers students the opportunity to practice and learn in a safe community-based hospital environment with a dedicated team to support their clinical growth.”

The new program joins Riverside’s array of clinical internships and residencies to educate and train new physicians in the fields of emergency medicine, family medicine and OB/GYN, as well as nurses, pharmacists and spiritual care professionals.
