Stay fit at any age with a complete fall prevention program

Building Balance is a specialized healthy aging program for adults with a history of stability issues or concerns about falling.

Taught by an exercise specialist and approved by Riverside physicians and therapists, Building Balance improves muscular stability through exercise and resistance strength training. In other words, it will help you prevent falls and gain better balance in life!

This program is offered at both fitness center locations.

Schedule

Peninsula:
Classes are ongoing and held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m.

Middle Peninsula:
Classes are ongoing and held on Tuesdays from 9 to 10 a.m.

Williamsburg:
Classes are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. in an 8-week series for $120.

Benefits of Fall Prevention Programs

For many people, balance and stability may decline with age. The result is an increased risk of falls, which can lead to bruising, fractures, brain damage, and other complications, ultimately decreasing the ability to live an active and independent life.

Healing injuries from a fall takes time, which takes you away from being active and engaging muscles, and leads to an increased risk of falling again.

That's why preventing falls is a critical component to healthy aging. But there are other benefits to a fall prevention program that focuses on strength training and balance:

  • Increased balance and strength can help improve coordination, which gives you the skills and physical ability to control a fall that's inevitable and potentially prevent injury.
  • Muscles protect us, our muscles, and our joints. Having more muscles means more protection.
  • Studies show that resistance exercises strengthen bones, and stronger bones are less likely to fracture as easily in the event of a fall.
  • Regular exercise contributes to maintaining brain function as we age. When we think well, we move well. When we move well, we reduce our fall risks.
