If you’re suffering from an addiction to drugs or alcohol, you may need professional help to break the cycle of substance abuse.
“Breaking free from substance addiction can be difficult to do on your own,” says Betsy Lang, MHA, BSN, RN, NE-BC at Riverside Mental Health & Recovery Center. “Getting help from professionally trained addiction rehabilitation specialists – who can assist with detox programs, therapy, and long-term emotional and behavioral support – can help put you on the path for a healthier, brighter future."
Be honest with yourself about your substance use
You may be telling yourself you’re still in control – that your use of alcohol or illegal drugs isn’t really a problem.
But the truth is, if you’re using any illegal drug to get high regularly – whether cocaine, heroin, opioids, methamphetamines, or other prescription medications – you may need professional help to get sober. The same is true if you’re abusing alcohol routinely.
To accurately assess whether you may have a problem with substance addiction, ask yourself these questions:
- Do you drink four or more alcoholic drinks per day multiple times a week?
- Do you often think about how and when you’ll get your next high?
- Has your substance use pushed away friends or family or caused problems with your job?
- Have you resorted to theft or other crime to pay for drugs?
- Do you find it hard to function when you’re not using a drug of some kind?
- Has your need for alcohol or drugs overtaken your interest in eating, hygiene, or sleep?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, it could be time to seek professional help for your addiction.
There’s no better time than now to get help
It may be tempting to put off making the call for addiction help. Don’t. Every day, 28 people die in the U.S. due to drunk-driving related accidents. Between April 2020 and April 2021, more than 100,000 Americans died from opioid overdoses. By delaying getting help, you risk becoming one of these depressing statistics.
The longer you wait to seek treatment, the more deeply your addiction can take hold. Plus, if you’re a parent, putting off getting sober puts not only you at risk but also your children.
When you’re ready to seek help, we’re here for you. Riverside Mental Health & Recovery Center offers an intensive outpatient program for adults dealing with addiction.
