1-800-675-6368For many patients, non-surgical treatments are prescribed prior to any consideration of spine surgery. When possible, many of these more conservative approaches can be effective in controlling pain or other symptoms without the risks involved with surgery. Keep in mind that not all treatments are appropriate for all conditions, so options vary for each individual patient.
The majority of non-surgical spine treatments fall into one of the following types of interventions. For many of these procedures, which are listed more specifically below this overview, your physician may utilize ultrasound, X-ray or other diagnostic technology to locate the precise target site before administering the treatment.
An ablation is a minimally invasive procedure in which the nerve fibers that carry pain signals to the brain are destroyed, often using radiofrequency or heat.
An epidural block is a minimally invasive injection into an area known as the “epidural space,” which is just above the Dural membrane that protects the spinal nerves and spinal cord. Epidural injections of long-acting steroid solutions are frequently used for various back conditions. They are routinely used for individuals with issues of the lumbar spine (lower back) and occasionally used in the cervical spine (neck).
These minimally invasive anesthetic injections are directed at specific nerves that can generate spinal pain.
