Household Model
As a Riverside healthy living community, our approach to all levels of care, especially assisted living and nursing care, is inspired by our residents and their loved ones.
Their voice, their preferences, their needs and their concerns drive our decisions.
The flexible structure and schedule allow each resident to feel empowered to make their own choices and live the life they create for themselves.
Reframing Long-term Care
Within our healthy living community, and especially at Heron Cove, Sanders features the Household Model of long-term care, a transformative approach to convalescent/nursing care that dismisses the outdated, traditional nursing home template. The Household Model is resident-focused, from the physical layout of the space to the training of staff and the availability of choices in schedules, dining and activities.
Transforming the Physical Space
- Individual homes with smaller numbers of residents
- A fully functional kitchen
- Private bedrooms
- Shared living and dining areas where residents enjoy family-style meals and can easily interact
The residence is comfortable, private and rather than “home-like,” it is simply home.
A New Beginning for Older Adult Living
Residents across the Sanders community wake up, eat, bathe and go to bed when they choose rather than on a pre-determined schedule, and the staff accommodates and honors these preferences. This approach promotes:
- Independence
- Greater engagement
- Improved quality of life
- The reality of being in control and making informed decisions
These values are central to our senior living philosophy but may be hard to find in a traditional nursing home setting.
The Future of Residential Care is Available Now
An extensive amount of research shows that people do best and report the highest levels of satisfaction when they are in an environment that is as close as possible to the way they’ve always lived their lives. On the most basic level, that kind of familiarity, and the comfort it brings, are at the heart of the Household Model residence.
