On January 12th, a massive, 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck Haiti near the capital of Port-au-Prince on Tuesday. The suffering and devastation is hard to comprehend. Our heart goes out to the children and families of Haiti - already victims of poverty and many serious health issues. There are a number of well-known international relief agencies already on the ground in Haiti rushing emergency aid to survivors.
What else is being done?
The Medical Society of Virginia (MSV) Foundation, Virginia’s most influential, trusted and recognized vehicle for enabling the physician community to improve the health of all Virginians, has agreed to serve as a front line volunteer triage for Virginia physicians interested in providing medical support to the people of Haiti.
MSV Foundation Responding But Needs Our Help!
Right now there is an urgent need for physicians with expertise in: orthopedic surgery, vascular surgery, emergency medicine, anesthesiology and physicians who are fluent in French and/or Creole.
The MSV Foundation is connecting our volunteer physicians with Partners in Health which is a Boston, Massachusetts-based nonprofit health care organization dedicated to providing a “preferential health care option for the poor”. Their oldest and largest project is in Haiti where they operate 8 community clinics including a large sociomedical complex in Cange.
Immediately after the devastating earthquake in Haiti, Partners in Health established a “Stand With Haiti” campaign, raising funds and recruiting qualified medical personnel to serve relief efforts in the disaster zone. On January 16th, the Partners in Health/Zammi Lasante team was designated by the World Health Organization to serve alongside the Haitian Ministry of Health as coordinators of the public University Hospital in Port-au-Prince, supporting the administration and staff in restoring services at the city’s central hospital.
