About Steven G. Spellman, MD
Dr. Spellman has been in practice in Newport News, Virginia since 1986. He grew up on Long Island and received his Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry from the University of Wisconsin. He received his Doctorate in Medicine from State University of New York-Downstate Medical Center in 1982. Following his Internal Medicine internship at Staten Island Hospital, he completed his Ophthalmology residency at Nassau County Medical Center where he served as Chief Resident.
Dr. Spellman's chief interests are cataracts, glaucoma, and corneal disease. In addition, he performs plastic surgery procedures for eyelids, strabismus surgery to straighten misaligned eyes, and laser surgery for diabetic retinal disease. His practice is not strictly oriented to eye disease, but is geared to all ages and includes routine eye exams.
Dr. Spellman became a Diplomate of the National Board of Medical Examiners in 1982, Board Certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology in 1987, and became a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, Medical Society of Virginia, American Society for Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, Tidewater Ophthalmological and Otorlaryngological Society, American Medical Association, and Newport News Medical Society. He serves on the Board of Directors for Riverside Physician Associates.
