About Shu-Guang Xu, MD

Dr. Xu earned his medical degree from Wenzhou Medical College. He completed a doctorate degree in neuroanatomy at Louisiana State University, followed by an internship and residency in 1998 at Monmouth Medical Center in New Jersey. He completed a fellowship in child neurology at Harvard Medical School in 2001, and later, two mini fellowships in epilepsy at Wake Forest University. Dr. Xu is board-certified in neurology with special qualifications in child neurology by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.

Dr. Xu’s mother had frequent health issues and hoped that one of her children would become a doctor, so he decided to pursue medicine — and discovered that he loved it. With a desire to understand the complex structures and functions of the brain and nervous system, Dr. Xu became a neurologist, considering neuroanatomy to be a beauty of the human body.

Passionate about helping adult and pediatric patients with a wide range of neurological conditions and diseases, Dr. Xu has a special interest in headaches, cerebral palsy, seizures, head injury, multiple sclerosis, neuromuscular diseases, dementia and Parkinson’s disease. He provides a variety of treatments and procedures, including Botox injections for migraine and cerebral palsy.

While growing up by the sea, Dr. Xu developed a love for swimming, diving, fishing and crabbing. Living on Virginia’s Eastern Shore fulfills his longtime dream of having a boat and enjoying the water again. Dr. Xu married a medical school classmate, now a pathologist, and the couple has two daughters.
