About Robert George Strange Jr., MD
Robert G. Strange Jr., M.D., is a cardiothoracic surgeon specializing in minimally invasive, robotic-assisted procedures for lung and thoracic cancers, as well as noncancerous conditions affecting the chest wall, pleura, diaphragm, esophagus and lungs. Dr. Strange is also skilled in heart surgery, with expertise in extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) and transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). His passion for thoracic care was deeply influenced by a family member’s journey with cancerous lung nodules, inspiring him to provide each patient with the same compassionate care he would offer his own family.
Dr. Strange earned a Bachelor of Science from George Mason University in Fairfax, VA and then completed his medical degree at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond. He finished a general surgery residency and a trauma/surgical critical care fellowship at Penn State University in Pennsylvania. Dr. Strange then completed a cardiothoracic surgery fellowship at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. He is board certified in cardiothoracic surgery by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery and in both general surgery and surgical critical care by the American Board of Surgery.
Dr. Strange retired as a Captain from the United States Navy’s Medical Service Corps after 28 years of service in the U.S. and abroad.
When he’s not in the operating room, Dr. Strange enjoys spending time with family and staying fit by cycling, weightlifting, snowboarding and stand-up paddle boarding. He values being near the water and appreciates the deep sense of community in Hampton Roads.
