About Rafayat Samnan Hossain, MD

After earning his medical degree in 2012 from the St. George’s University School of Medicine in Grenada, Dr. Hossain completed an internal medicine residency at the State University of New York Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn. He remained with SUNY to complete fellowships in hepatology and gastroenterology, finishing his training in 2019. Dr. Hossain is board-certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine with pending subspecialty certification in gastroenterology.

Dr. Hossain enjoys the interdisciplinary, collaborative approach of gastroenterology, finding that the specialty gives him a unique opportunity to impact the lives of his patients. He believes it is important to make himself available to patients and to spend time getting to know them. This allows Dr. Hossain and his patients to work together to formulate treatment plans with better outcomes.

Dr. Hossain is an extensively trained physician with special expertise in endoscopic treatment of gastrointestinal bleeding, colon cancer screening, gastroesophageal reflux disease, peptic ulcer disease, viral hepatitis and fatty liver disease. He is excited about the introduction of artificial intelligence technology and its potential to improve the detection of GI disease precursors, thus reducing disease incidence.

Originally from Bangladesh, Dr. Hossain moved to New York with his family after high school. He is new to Hampton Roads and has already found that local people are very warm and welcoming. Dr. Hossain is married to Samera, an occupational therapist who enjoys home décor and cooking. In his free time, Dr. Hossain enjoys road trips, hiking, traveling to new countries and spending time with family and friends.
