About Melanie Ames, FNP

Melanie became certified as a licensed practical nurse and emergency medical technician in the U.S. Army Reserves in 1999. In 2004, she earned an Associate of Science in Nursing from Thomas Nelson Community College, followed by a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2005. She went on to earn a Master of Science in Nursing from Hampton University in 2017. Melanie is board-certified as a family nurse practitioner by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Board.

With two decades of nursing experience, Melanie is a seasoned health care provider who has spent most of her career working with Riverside. Her background includes emergency and trauma care, forensic nursing, adolescent health care, sexually transmitted disease care and prevention, and medical care for patients who have experienced abuse, sexual assault and domestic violence.

Melanie’s personal medical philosophy is summed up by a Theodore Roosevelt quote: “No one cares how much you know, until they know how much you care.” She believes that empathy and a non-judgmental attitude can go a long way in patient care. Melanie enjoys working with all stages of life and has a particular passion for educating patients and interpreting medical jargon into understandable terms.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, Melanie grew up around the world in an Air Force family. Since 1994, she has lived in Hampton, where she loves being close to the beach and the mountains. Melanie is a Steelers fan who enjoys traveling, running 5k and half-marathon races, watching Little League baseball and spending time with her family. Melanie and her husband, Anthony, have four children.
