About John R. Barley IV, DO
Dr. Barley is a fellowship trained sports medicine physician specializing in concussion diagnosis and management and diagnostic ultrasound. Additional specialties include ultrasound-guided injections and on-field sports coverage. Passionate about preventive medicine and exercise, he implements a holistic team approach to medical care.
After earning his medical degree from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, Dr. Barley completed a family medicine residency locally with Riverside Family Medicine & Pediatrics Brentwood in affiliation with Virginia Commonwealth University. He subsequently completed fellowship training in primary care sports medicine at Wake Forest University. Dr. Barley is board certified in both family medicine and primary care sports medicine.
Playing Division I football inspired Dr. Barley to become a sports medicine physician. He has provided care for teams at Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem State University and the North Carolina School of Arts. He currently serves as head team physician and medical director at Christopher Newport University, NN Public Schools athletics and Lionsbridge FC. He is also team physician for Hampton University, concussion specialist for the Apprentice School athletics and director of sports medicine for Riverside. His extensive experience in this area has resulted in a high level of familiarity with the health care concerns of the local population. Dr. Barley specializes in the treatment of non-operative musculoskeletal injuries, concussion diagnosis and management, diagnostic ultrasound, ultrasound-guided injections and team physician responsibilities.
Originally from western Pennsylvania, Dr. Barley enjoys golf, traveling, fishing and cooking. He and his wife have four children.
