About Jimi O. Akingbade, MD

Dr. Akingbade is a fellowship-trained and board-certified pulmonary and critical care physician specializing in sarcoidosis and interstitial lung disease. Dr. Akingbade also focuses on caring for patients with advanced lung cancer and for those with asthma, COPD, lung nodules, chronic cough, pleural diseases, pulmonary fibrosis, environmental and occupational related lung diseases. 

After earning a Doctor of Medicine degree from the International University of the Health Sciences, Dr. Akingbade completed an internship and a residency in internal medicine at Carilion Clinic Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine. He completed a fellowship in pulmonary diseases and critical care medicine at the University of Virginia School of Medicine. He is certified in pulmonary medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine.

Dr. Akingbade selected his specialty because of the opportunity to manage critical care patients which requires a holistic approach, considering the interplay among various organ systems.  He appreciates the challenge offered by the wide variety of conditions in his patients.  Exhibiting empathy and developing rapport with his patients and their families is important to Dr. Akingbade.  His goal is to provide patient-centered care that focuses on the patient's preferences and values.  Seeing his patients as individuals and not for their disease is important to Dr. Akingbade.  He seeks to understand the barriers to access quality healthcare and looks to provide resources to overcome those challenges.

Dr. Akingbade enjoys the many activities and amenities offered in the Hampton Roads area.  He likes the closeness to rivers, beaches, museums, parks, shopping and restaurants.  In his free time, he enjoys reading, biking, watching sports, traveling and spending time with friends and family.
