About Jamila Scarlett Wynter, MD

Jamila Wynter, M.D., is a fellowship-trained gastroenterologist specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of digestive diseases including acid reflux, difficulty swallowing, internal and external hemorrhoids, rectal bleeding, unexplained anemia, changes in bowel frequency, bloating, irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease and chronic liver disease.  Dr. Wynter performs various gastrointestinal procedures, such as colonoscopy, endoscopy, enteroscopy, sigmoidoscopy and capsule endoscopy.  

Dr. Wynter earned her undergraduate degree from Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut and her medical degree from The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. She completed a residency in internal medicine at Harvard’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston and a gastroenterology fellowship with Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. She is a member of the American College of Gastroenterology.   

Dr. Wynter is passionate about educating her patients on preventative health measures such as colon cancer screening, as well as healthy diet and lifestyle. The most rewarding part of her job is building long-lasting relationships with her patients and making them feel at ease in a warm and welcoming clinical environment.  

Dr. Wynter volunteers her time and expertise as a member of the Virginia area board of directors for the American Cancer Society.  

An avid reader and traveler, Dr. Wynter enjoys reading a good book, trying new restaurants and spending time with family and friends. Originally from Atlanta, she now resides in Newport News with her husband and loves the waterfront areas.
