Floors
- Rearrange furniture in your home to make your paths clear.
- Remove throw rugs or use double-sided tape or a non-slip backing.
- Keep objects, such as books, magazines and shoes off the floor.
- Coil or tape wires next to the wall.
Stairs
- Fix loose or uneven steps and loose handrails.
- Make sure carpet is firmly attached to every step, or replace carpet with non-slip rubber tread.
- Have an electrician install lights and light switches at the top and bottom of stairs.
Kitchen
- Rearrange items so that the things you use most often are on lower shelves.
- If you use a step stool, make sure it is steady. Never use a chair as a step stool.
Bathrooms
- Put a non-stick rubber mat or self-stick strips on the tub or shower floor.
- If you need support when getting in and out of the tub or up from the toilet, have a carpenter install grab bars inside the tub and next to the toilet.
Bedrooms
- Have a lamp next to the bed that is easy to reach.
- Use a night-light to illuminate your path at night.
General tips
- Exercise regularly.
- Ask your pharmacist if any of your medications may make you dizzy.
- Get up slowly after sitting or lying down.
- Wear shoes indoors and outside. Avoid going barefoot or wearing slippers.
