About Tokunbo James Matthews, MD
Tokunbo J. Matthews, M.D., is a fellowship-trained pulmonary (lung) and critical care physician specializing in sarcoidosis, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and bronchoscopy. He has interests in tools that measure lung function and advanced bronchoscopy, including using ultrasound and electromagnetic techniques. Dr. Matthews enjoys forming long-term relationships with patients in the office setting and providing progressive services and procedures during critical illness.
Dr. Matthews received his undergraduate degree from the College of William & Mary and earned his medical degree from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Maryland. He completed his residency in internal medicine at Wright Patterson Air Force Base/Wright State University near Dayton, Ohio. Dr. Matthews finished a pulmonary and critical care fellowship at San Antonio Medical Center at Fort Sam in Houston, Texas and he is double board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in pulmonary and critical care medicine.
Dr. Matthews enjoys pulmonology and critical care medicine as it allows him to build long-term relationships with his patients in the outpatient setting while also enabling him to perform procedures and care for patients in the ICU. He is the recipient of several military awards and decorations, including the Air Force Meritorious Service Medal.
While the Air Force took him all around the country, he is glad to be in Virginia where he and his wife met as undergrads. An avid sports fan and former soccer player, Dr. Matthews loves watching the World Cup as well as basketball and American football. He enjoys spending time with his wife and kids, attending sporting events, cooking, exploring the outdoors, fishing and bike riding.
