About Richard Scott Sweeney, DDS

After earning a Bachelor of Science in health sciences from James Madison University, Dr. Sweeney earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree in 2008 from the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry in Chapel Hill. He remained there to complete his residency training in 2009.

The array of technical, artistic, complicated and fun aspects of dentistry compelled Dr. Sweeney to pursue this specialty. He believes in a conservative approach guided by research and experience, and emphasizes patient involvement in all areas of care. He also recognizes that the key to understanding his patients is simply to listen to what they say.

Dr. Sweeney is committed to treating everyone with the God-given dignity and respect they deserve. He practices comprehensive dentistry with a special focus on treating patients who are medically compromised, mentally disabled, behaviorally limited or undergoing cancer treatment. He also has expertise in emergency dental care.

Dr. Sweeney is a Hampton Roads native, born in Portsmouth and raised in Virginia Beach. He loves the ability to experience all four seasons in our area. In his free time, Dr. Sweeney enjoys exercise, vintage video games and most of all, spending time with his wife and three sons.

I cannot say enough about how please I was with Dr. Richard Sweeney and his staff's service from beginning to end of the appointment. During my time with Dr. Sweeney he was in constant communication with myself and his Assistant and they displayed a wonderful working relationship. Dr. Sweeney spoke directly to me and was very informative about my situation and the plan to start working on a healthy mouth. He was well spoken and also made sure he explained anything that I was unclear or uncertain of. We outlined a plan going forward and I was encouraged to call often to see if I could get in sooner as I have alot going on in my mouth. I had to make an appointment for months out due to a full schedule (which is understandable) and being encouraged to call and/or reach out on the portal really meant alot to me. It showed dedication to consumer needs and also the commitment for wanting the best for his patients overall health and wellness as soon as possible. Truly the first dentist that I have been to in about 2 decades that I have felt completely at ease with.

Best Dentist ever!! He pulled my tooth pain free. My mouth didn't swell, no excessive bleeding and I take Eliquis. There was no after pain. He had prescribed anti anxiety medication that I took prior to procedure. He was so friendly and kind . I was done in 20 minutes just like the assistant told me. It is day 3 and I have not needed to use pain reliever. Amazing !!
