Mary earned her nursing degree at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, a Master of Science in nursing from George Mason University in Fairfax and her Family Nurse Practitioner degree from Marymount University in Fairfax. She is licensed as a family nurse practitioner by the Virginia Department of Health Professions and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.
