About Karen Dorothy Louise Smith, MD
Karen Smith, M.D., is a board-certified rheumatology physician caring for patients with autoimmune and musculoskeletal diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, gout and lupus. Dr. Smith uses both conventional and lifestyle medicine and enjoys working with patients to achieve their health goals.
Dr. Smith earned her medical degree from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. She completed her internal medicine residency at the Medical College of Pennsylvania and a rheumatology fellowship at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Keeping an open mind and supporting patients through their health challenges is important to Dr. Smith. She aims to get patients back to their favorite activities using the most up-to-date immunologic medicines and lifestyle changes like diet and exercise. She believes we have many ways to regain health and values her patients’ opinions and preferences.
Dr. Smith enjoys the climate and history of the area. As an avid walker, she spends her free time exploring Virginia’s historical sites and beautiful landscapes with her family. One of her favorite spots is Colonial Williamsburg, a destination she has visited since 2nd grade.
