About Alexander A. Schult, MD

After earning his Doctor of Medicine from the National University of Ireland, Galway School of Medicine, pulmonary and critical care physician Alexander A. Schult, M.D., completed his residency in internal medicine at Albany Medical College in New York. He subsequently completed fellowships in pulmonary and critical care medicine at Tulane Medical School and Louisiana State University. Dr. Schult is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in pulmonology and critical care medicine. He is also a fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians.

Dr. Schult â€‹chose his specialties because the lungs are essential to the entire body and intensive care medicine is stimulating.  From caring for outpatient conditions such as asthma and sarcoidosis to managing ventilator requiring patients in the ICU, healing must begin with proper, adequate breathing. With years of expertise across the vast array of pulmonary conditions, he has particular interests in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, lung cancer, pleural effusions, pulmonary nodules and pulmonary fibrosis/interstitial lung disease.  In the hospital, Dr. Schult performs bronchoscopies, provides consults and manages critical care patients.  Prior to moving to the Eastern Shore, he spent 20 years in Charlottesville caring for patients at Martha Jefferson Hospital where he served in various leadership positions over the years, including chief of internal medicine, co-director of the medical ICU and medical director of pulmonary rehab.  He also served as a volunteer medical provider at the Charlottesville Free Clinic.

Dr. Schult recognizes that knowledge matters in medicine, and so does experience and a caring attitude.  He believes that if he isn’t listening carefully to his patients then he is not able to serve his purpose.  He also recognizes that, especially in critical care settings, the focus often needs to be on both the patient and the loved ones at the bedside.

Raised in County Mayo, Ireland from the age of 10, Dr. Schult was born in Hamburg, Germany. He is fluent in both English and German.  With four grown children, Dr. Schult is truly excited to be part of the Eastern Shore community and get back to fishing and spending time on the water.  Having recently fallen in love with sailing, he is excited to enjoy the Chesapeake Bay.
