Honoring Our Veterans: A Commitment to Service Beyond the Uniform

Riverside Health proudly supports veterans and their families by offering dedicated programs that pave the way for rewarding careers in healthcare, recognizing their unwavering commitment to serving others. Explore our partnerships and opportunities designed to honor your service and transition to civilian life.

The Military Medics and Corpsman (MMAC) Program provides valuable career pathways for transitioning service members, veterans, members of the Guard and Reserve, and military spouses. Riverside Health collaborates with the MMAC team to support these individuals in pursuing civilian roles within the health system. We assist transitioning combat medics, corpsmen, and medical technicians in finding clinical positions, while also helping those whose military training and expertise align with our non-clinical roles. Additionally, we partner with military spouses to help them build or continue their careers, both in clinical and non-clinical fields.

Military Medics and Corpsmen (MMAC) Program

Riverside Health is certified by the Virginia Values Veterans (V3) program. This program helps Riverside develop long-term strategies to recruit, hire, and retain Virginia Veterans and their spouses. They offer peer-to-peer support through the transition process, host hiring events, and resume writing and review courses.

Military Medics and Corpsmen (MMAC) Program

The Partnership for Your Success (PaYS) Program partners the U.S. Army with Riverside. This program guarantees interviews and possible employment for American Soldiers after they serve their country. Soldiers who participate gain opportunities to join organizations like Riverside who understand the value of military service.

Leadership Spotlight: Honoring Our Veterans in Healthcare

Colonel Michael S. Oshiki, MD, FAAFP (Retired)

Hospital President at Riverside Regional Medical Center

Colonel Oshiki is a native of Washington, DC and a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he earned a Bachelor of Science. As a Distinguished Military Graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison Reserve Officer Training Corps program, he received his initial commission as an armored cavalry officer. After seven years as an armored cavalry officer, Colonel Oshiki received his Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree from the Uniformed Services University and completed a residency in Family Medicine at DeWitt Army Community Hospital Fort Belvoir, VA, where he served as Chief Resident. From there, his resume includes operational and leadership assignments creating a resume that highlights a life of service for which anyone could be proud!

Although he is newer to Riverside, Riverside is not new to him, “While I was stationed at Ft. Eustis from 2001 to 2004, I was the Chief of Primary Care at what was then McDonald Army Community Hospital. When I had patients who were acutely ill beyond the capability of our hospital, I would often transfer them to Riverside if there was concern about how far the Naval Hospital was in Portsmouth. I was always very impressed by the quality of care that my patients received here.” Additionally, he told us about a very special patient we had the pleasure of caring for during that time – his daughter, “I was again struck by how great the experience was.”

While discussing his reasons for joining the team upon his retirement, he said, “When I came back to interview here in the fall of 2021, I could barely recognize the place as the Pavilion didn’t exist the last time I was here! One of the things that really stood out to me as I interviewed was the deep roots Riverside had in the community – over 100 years! And the system grew as the community grew – in response to their needs. And the mission statement ‘to care for others as we would care for those we love’ really resonated with me and is way more than just a cool catch phrase. I can confidently say that this organization lives its mission because in my first week of working at Riverside, I realized that it truly represents the way we approach caring for patients and their families.”

Thank you, Dr. Oshiki, for your service and for choosing Riverside.

Colonel Eric Oh (Retired)

Director of Employee Engagement with our People Operations department

Colonel Oh has over 33 years of military service as a combat arms leader, rising from the rank of Private to Colonel. His military experience in the domestic and international operating environment spans the tactical, operational, and strategic levels of the Department of Defense. Most recently, he served as the Director of Operations with the Joint Task Force Civil Support, assigned to US Northern Command.

“My military career,” he says, “pairs perfectly with my role and function as the Employee Engagement Director – specifically in the area of leader development! Becoming familiar with the roles, functions, and impact of the many high-performing team members and leaders across the health system is an honor. Getting to see how they deliver the Riverside Care difference in all that they do is truly the most rewarding part of my job.”

While discussing what he loves so much about working for Riverside following his military service, he shares, “I love the ‘can-do’ spirit that runs through the fabric of Riverside Health… so many talented team members and leaders truly live the Riverside Care Difference – everyday. I am proud and humbled to serve alongside these RHS champions as well as being given the opportunity to learn and grow in such a dynamic health system.”

To emphasize the type of leader Colonel Oh is, he ended the interview thanking us for giving him “the opportunity to join a team of winners that are 'heart-wired' with providing the best patient care possible all the time, every day!”
