Riverside Clinical Rotation is a one-stop-shop for students searching for a way to complete school required practicums, externships, and job shadowing. We are focused on elevating student experiences at the many facilities in the Riverside Health through exemplary onboarding, student success initiatives and igniting students’ interests in health careers. It is our mission to educate, equip and elevate students during their experience to be the change in the future healthcare workforce.

We provide many learning opportunities to approximately 3,000 students from all over the country in areas both Clinical and Non-Clinical Studies. We look forward to fully becoming the next stop on your journey and serving all students across our system

Student Experiential Learning - Unpaid Nonclinical internships 

If you are at least 18 years old and currently enrolled in college in good standing looking for a learning experience that does not fall under a University and/or course requirement or wanting to learn more about your current field. Request an Education Enrichment Experience

Any student that participates in a clinical rotation or preceptorship within Riverside Health, must have an Affiliation Agreement*  in place between their attending institution and Riverside Health. If your institution does not have an affiliation agreement with Riverside Health, please contact the Education and Clinical Coordinator, Kristen Long. The average time to process an Affiliation Agreement can take between 6 to 8 weeks prior to your clinical rotation or preceptorship.

Student Compliance Items

Students are required to complete or provide the following items. 

  • Proof of criminal history background check that includes: 
    • Virginia Statewide Criminal Records
    • Residency History & Social Security Alert
    • National Record Indicator (Criminal Records & Nationwide Sex Offender Registry)
    • Nationwide Healthcare Fraud & Abuse Registry (FACIS Level III) databases
    • Nationwide Federal Criminal Records
  • Date of Birth
  • Last 4 digits of Social Security Number
  • College/University contact person's name and email address

  • Mandatory Computer Learning
  • CPR Certification – American Red Cross and American Heart Association accepted. The CPR training must be for health care providers or professional rescuers.
  • Proof of License/Certification Verification for post-entry graduate or doctoral nursing students.

Negative Urine Drug Screen

  • Proof of a negative 12-panel urine drug screen which checks for the presence of 12 highly addictive prescription drug metabolites that are easily accessible to health care professionals including:
    • Amphetamines
    • Barbiturates
    • Benzodiazepines
    • Marijuana
    • Cocaine
    • Opiates (Codeine, Hydrocodone, Hydromorphone, Morphine, Oxycodone, and Oxymorphone)
    • Phencyclidine
    • Methadone
    • Propoxyphene
    • Fentanyl, Meperidine, Tramadol
    • TestSure Adulterant Panel - simple method development with a powerful algorithm to ensure detection, identification, and estimation of concentration of materials which have been fraudulently or accidentally introduced into a product.

Tetanus Booster

  • Tetanus booster within past ten years (td or Tdap)

MMR Vaccines

  • Two measles, mumps & rubella (MMR) immunizations (or titers proving immunity)

Hepatitis B

  • Hepatitis B (HBV)3-vaccine immunization series completed or in progress OR: Heplisav (HepB-CpG) 2-vaccine series – This vaccine requires a positive titer (anti-HBs ≥10 mIU/ml) to prove immunity.

Varicella

  • Two varicella (chickenpox) immunizations (or titers proving immunity)

Tuberculosis Screening: Proof of an immunity has been provided to my school. Check method of proof of immunity:

  • Negative IGRA test results from either (1) QuantifFERON®-TB Gold In-Tube test (GFT-GIT) or (2) T-SPOT®B test (T-Spot)
  • Mantoux Tuberculin Skin Tests (TST) according to the protocols bulleted below.
    • 2-TSTs within the past 12 months (initial placement only) of placement application.
    • TST must not expire prior to the end of the learning experience.
    • For previous positive TST / IGRA, documentation of a negative chest x-ray subsequent to the positive TST. An updated TB Screening Questionnaire Documentation Form (RHS-EXT-503.H) must be submitted with each placement application.
  • Following initial placement, students will be required to submit an updated TB Screening Questionnaire Documentation Form (RHS-EXT-503.H) with each placement application.

NOTE: A copy of current proof of immunity or current TST to be carried at all times while at a Riverside facility.

Influenza

  • Annual Influenza vaccination has been completed and provided to my school. Only intramuscular or intradermal vaccine will be accepted.
  • Fall semester: Completed by November 1st. (Flu vaccine administered prior to August 1st will not meet this requirement.)
  • Spring semester: Completed prior to the first day assigned to an RHS facility.
  • Summer semester (May 1-August 30): No influenza vaccination required.

NOTE: A copy of the flu vaccination documentation to be carried at all times while at a Riverside facility (during fall and spring semesters).

COVID-19 Vaccination Series

  • COVID-19 2-dose series vaccination required.

Request Placement

myClinicalExchange (mCE) is Riverside Health’s student data management system through which all student clearances are centralized. Once your mCE account has been created, you will receive an automated introductory e-mail from mCE prompting you to log in and complete your compliance checklist.

Note: Do not attempt to log into mCE without having received the automated e-mail.

For all logins
Make sure you click the “Student Login” button at the center of the page to log in. If you click the “Registration" button at the top of the page, and then click on "Student," you will be in the wrong location and will be directed to pay for your mCE account.

Initial Login
Please navigate to https://www.myclinicalexchange.com/MainPage.aspx by either following this link or copy/pasting it into your web browser. Please register from your computer and not from a cell phone. Chrome is recommended.

In the upper right corner of the homepage, click Login>Student from the drop-down menu.

Click Activate Account

Complete Password Setup to Secure Account

Once your account is secured, there are three remaining steps:

You will see a Success! You have registered notification

To access your Riverside Health rotation compliance checklist, click on the rotation number link listed in your Alerts section (Rotation ##### – Checklist not in compliance).

You may only begin your Riverside Health student experience once you have submitted your clearance documents, and they have been approved by Student Affairs Administration. The duration of this process depends on how quickly you are able to gather the necessary information and whether or not you have to obtain additional immunizations or tests.

Please note, all documentation must be submitted in English.

Submitting your compliance checklist

Once you have all your clearance items ready, be sure to click the Submit for Approval button at the top of your checklist. Your compliance items are not visible to anyone other than yourself until you submit them.

Please allow 24-48 business hours for your compliance items to be reviewed. Please note, clearance times may be extended during peak semester times or after holiday weekends.

Note: In your compliance checklist, you may see the following icons:

Green thumb up

  • A green thumb up indicates the item has been approved and is clear.

Red thumb down

A red thumb down can mean two things:

  • You have not yet submitted the item for approval.
  • The item is out of compliance.

Orange triangle

  • The item will expire during your rotation period.
  • This item is not out of compliance until the renewal date listed on your compliance checklist.
  • This item is not affecting your overall clearance.
  • Common items affected include Flu, HealthStream CBLs and BLS/CPR.

Thank you for completing all your clearances for Riverside Health through mCE. Once you have the Green thumb up in mCE and have received the automated e-mail stating you have completed all clearance items, please follow the steps below to assist you in starting your rotation. You can find your supervisor/preceptor’s information in the initial e-mail you received from mCE. Once you are cleared, connect with your Riverside Health preceptor/supervisor and/or your university faculty to find out:

  • Your start date and time
  • Where you should report
  • Dress code expectations
  • Professionalism expectation

Frequently Asked Questions

The application process can take between 3 to 5 business days to complete if all necessary paperwork and requirements have been received.

Your application is valid until the end date on your student placement application.

All request for clinical rotation must be received 30 days prior to the start date listed on the application.  The application must be completed and received by the Education and Clinical Contracting department no later than 15 days prior to the start date. 
Yes, employees must complete the same process.

If you are completing another rotation within the same calendar year, you will have to submit the first page of the application with the updated learning experience.

If it is a new calendar year, a full application has to be completed. 

An email confirmation will be sent to you, your clinical coordinator and preceptor once the application has been approved.

All students must wear their student badges when they are scheduled for their clinical rotation or job shadowing assignment.

Programs will automatically be assigned necessary computer access. Any additional security /facility access must be requested from the Protection office
