The Riverside Child Development & Learning Center not only wants to provide quality child care, but to offer a variety of activities and resources for our children and families. Our vision is: Riverside Child Development & Learning Center will provide each child it serves the opportunity to develop mind and body to be successful in every aspect of life.

We offer a variety of programs and services. The center serves a morning snack (8-8:30 a.m.) and an afternoon snack (2:30-3 p.m.). The center also provides milk, juice and water. Children bring their own lunch and are served between 11:15 a.m. and noon. *Our center is peanut butter-free and nut-free!

Four times a year we offer in-house portraits:

  • School and class pictures in the fall
  • Holiday pictures in the winter
  • Live bunny pictures in the spring
  • Beach pictures in the summer

For our Two's and Three's Preschool and Pre-K students we offer an optional on-site class once a week by Little People's Creative Workshop. *The cost is paid by the parent. For our Three's Preschool and Pre-K classes, we have Mighty Kicks Soccer on-site once a week. *The cost is paid by the parent. Our Pre-K class has a Summer Camp program with a variety of field trips, visitors and activities. *Additional fees apply.

We provide the Ages & Stages Questionnaires for all students which is completed by the parent. This is a tool used to assess your child's development throughout their time at the center. Our Older Toddlers (18 months) and up participate in the Brigance Screening, which is an advanced developmental screening tool administered by the teachers. And, our Older Toddlers and up also receive a Progress Report twice per year. All of these tools are used to ensure your child is ready for each stage of life up to Kindergarten and beyond!

We offer opportunities for children to give back with events such as St. Jude's Trike-A-Thon and our support of the Virginia Peninsula Food Bank and Angel Tree (helping families in need). For our parents, we provide information on parenting classes offered throughout the community, and various publications such as Scholastic's Parent & Child Magazine, Tidewater Family Magazine and the Hampton Roads Kids' Directory, as available. We also offer Parent's Night Out throughout the year on a Friday or Saturday so parents can have some time outside of work kid-free ($5 per hour).

Our curriculum is The Itty Bitty Bookworm, a literacy-based, early childhood professional-created program based on quality children's literature. The program is designed for children 2–5 years old and follows the guidelines for The National Association for the Education of Young Children's Indicators of an Effective Curriculum. These effective curriculum indicators include:

  • Children are active and engaged.
  • Goals are clear and shared by all.
  • Curriculum is evidence-based.
  • Valued content is learned through investigation and focused, intentional teaching.
  • Curriculum builds on prior learning and experiences.
  • Curriculum is comprehensive.
  • Professional standards validate the curriculum subject-matter content.
  • The curriculum is likely to benefit children.

In addition, the Three's classroom will continue to use The Letter People program as a supplemental curriculum to enhance the development of language and literacy. The Pre-K classroom will also begin a new supplemental curriculum called Get Set for School. This program is an award-winning curriculum that prepares children for Kindergarten by using developmentally appropriate, engaging hands-on and multi-sensory activities to teach Readiness & Writing, Language & Literacy, and Numbers & Math.
