RRMC Magnet Journey

Riverside Regional Medical Center has been awarded Magnet recognition by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). This prestigious designation is recognized worldwide as the “gold standard” of nursing excellence, in which designees must meet a set of rigorous criteria of successful nursing practices and strategies to deliver safe, high-quality patient care. RRMC is the first of Riverside’s four acute care hospitals to achieve Magnet designation.

The Magnet Model is a five-component framework designed to guide health care organizations in improving nursing services, achieving excellence in nursing practice and creating a positive work environment for care teams. The core components are transformational leadership, structural empowerment, exemplary professional practice, new knowledge, innovations and improvements and empirical quality results. Riverside Health uses nursing shared governance between direct-care nurses and nursing leaders to encourage open communication fostering continuous improvements in nursing research, professional development opportunities, mentorship and other evidenced based practice projects.

“Receiving the Magnet status underscores our commitment to creating a supportive and collaborative workplace where nurses feel heard and valued,” says Tonya Vermette, DNP, APRN, FNP-C, NEA-BC, Magnet Program Director at Riverside Regional Medical Center. “The recognition not only enhances nurse satisfaction through supportive leadership but also leads to improved clinical outcomes and reduced RN turnover, ultimately benefiting our patients and clinical teams.”

The lengthy multi-step designation process involves providing documented qualitative and quantitative patient outcome data. Once the organization passes a pre-determined score for written documentation, the ANCC conducts a rigorous on-site visit to assess the adherence to other components as set forth by the magnet model framework. After a comprehensive site visit, the Commission on Magnet Recognition votes on admittance.

“Earning Magnet designation is a testament to the dedication, skill and compassion of our nursing teams. This recognition reflects our commitment to providing the highest quality of care to our patients and creating an environment that fosters professional growth and excellence in nursing practice,” says Sadie Thurman, DNP, RN, NEA-BC, Chief Nursing Officer at Riverside Regional Medical Center. “And the journey doesn’t stop here, we are committed to continuing to advance our nursing standards and culture to strengthen and improve the quality, safety and service for all of our patients.”
