Riverside to Provide Athletic Team Support for Williamsburg-James City County Middle Schools

Newport News, Va. - Riverside Sports Medicine announced today its partnership agreement to provide athletic trainer services to the four middle schools in the Williamsburg-James City County (WJCC) public school system. Under the terms of the agreement, Riverside will staff a certified athletic trainer at school events and coordinate physician and medical subspecialist appointments away from the facilities – offering on-call service, daily medical coverage, pre-participation and injury evaluations, and treatment management.

The partnership, which runs through May of 2019, helps ensure that young student-athletes across the region get the very best medical care both on and off the field.

“WJCC is excited to begin this partnership with Riverside Sports Medicine,” said Adam Otstot, Curriculum Coordinator for Health and Physical Education at WJCC. “Providing preventative and responsive care for our middle school athletic programs with a certified athletic trainer is a very concrete way in which we are improving the safety of every student-athlete.”

Student-athletes will receive free annual sports physicals, Orthopedicspedic services, and a full spectrum of concussion testing, treatment and management. The agreement also gives student-athletes priority access to the broad Riverside Health System network for physician appointments, diagnostic imaging, surgery and rehabilitation. It does not prevent student-athletes from having access to the medical provider or medical care of their or their guardian’s choice.

“Riverside is proud to be working with WJCC public schools to make sure our youngest student-athletes are healthy and peRiverside Foundationorming at a high level at home, in the classroom, and in competition,” said Doug Culbert, Orthopedicspedic Service Line Administrator for Riverside Health System.

This latest partnership agreement underscores Riverside’s commitment to serving the local communities and student-athletes of all ages and abilities. Last year, Riverside announced multi-year agreements designating it the official sports medicine provider for both Christopher Newport University (CNU) and Lionsbridge FC, a new Premier Development League soccer team formed on the Virginia peninsula.

Earlier, Riverside launched a new Physical Therapy Sports Residency Program, among the first residencies of its kind in the state of Virginia. Participants in the program spend significant time in CNU athletic training rooms throughout their residency, which includes 1,500 total hours of required study and mentoring.
