Riverside Announces Enhancements to its Patient Engagement Platform, Further Improving Orthopedic Patient Education

August 15, 2022
Joint University Microsite

In the spring of 2021, Riverside Orthopedic & Sports Medicine Specialists launched a digital patient-education experience as part of its innovative “Joint University,” a program specifically designed to guide patients through total joint replacement surgery of the hip or knee. Today, Riverside introduced surveys to the digital platform, as well as additional content, to engage patients pre- and post-operatively to optimize patient outcomes.

“Since the launch of the Joint University microsite, we have seen an incredible response from our patients with 99% participation rate for those undergoing total knee replacement,” says Doug Culbert, Riverside’s associate vice president of orthopedics. “This valuable tool has not only improved clinical outcomes, but also has improved our patients’ experience and level of satisfaction with the care they have received. With the addition of the new surveys and content to the platform, patients are provided another avenue to provide direct feedback to our clinical team throughout their joint replacement journey.”

Three surveys that have been embedded in the microsite: prehab assessment, Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS), and Hip Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (HOOS). Prior to their total hip or knee replacement, patients are given access to the prehab assessment survey which provides feedback on what they need to do to prepare for surgery. Additionally, at pre-surgery, 3 and 12-months post-op intervals, patients are given access to either the KOOS or HOOS surveys to assess their health and functionality of their knee or hip.

“The addition of these surveys to the microsite will provide our clinical teams the opportunity to closely monitor and measure patient outcomes and evaluate the treatment plan for each patient,” says Daniel Valaik, M.D., a fellowship-trained and board-certified orthopedic surgeon specializing in hip and knee replacement. “We are committed to improving the lives of our patients and this tool gives us another opportunity to connect with our patients and remain involved in their day-to-day recovery from total joint replacement.”
