Christopher Newport University Extends Strategic FiveYear Partnership with Riverside Sports Medicine

Riverside Continues as Official Sports Medicine Provider for CNU, Providing Trainers, Physicians and Other Medical Experts to Care for Student-Athletes On and Off the Field

NEWPORT NCNU Athletics LogoEWS, VA – Riverside Sports Medicine and Christopher Newport University (CNU) have announced a strategic partnership that helps ensure CNU student athletes get the very best medical care both on and off the field. As CNU’s official sports medicine provider, Riverside will staff certified athletic trainers at team events and provide physicians and medical subspecialists away from the facilities – offering on-call service, daily medical coverage, injury evaluations and treatment management.

The new five-year agreement announced today between Riverside and CNU runs through 2022, extending a previous contract for sports medicine services that began in 2012.

“CNU’s ongoing partnership with Riverside Sports Medicine is about much more than having excellent team trainers,” said Kyle McMullin, Director of Athletics for Christopher Newport University. “It’s about having a comprehensive health care provider who can take a holistic approach to the evaluation, the follow-up care, the treatment, and the focus on their return to competition. When injuries or illness do occur, we can get our student-athletes back in the classroom and in the game quickly and safely.”

Under the agreement, Riverside Health System, one of the largest health care organizations in southeastern Virginia, will manage CNU’s Orthopedicspedic and sports medicine needs, pre-participation evaluations, and other medical services when necessary.

CNU’s student-athletes compete on 15 teams in 10 different sports. The sports medicine partnership with Riverside provides those student-athletes with free annual sports physicals, Orthopedicspedic services, and a full spectrum of concussion testing, treatment and management. The agreement also gives student-athletes direct access to the broad Riverside Health System network for physician appointments, diagnostic imaging, surgery and rehabilitation.

Today’s announcement is the latest collaborative development between CNU and Riverside, whose comprehensive 72-acre Riverside Regional Medical Center facility in Newport News, VA is located less than one mile from the CNU campus.

Earlier this year Riverside announced a new Physical Therapy Sports Residency Program, one of the first three residencies of its kind in the state of Virginia, underscoring the expertise and vision of the Riverside Sports Medicine team. Participants in the program spend significant time in CNU athletic training rooms each week throughout their residency, which includes 1,500 total hours of required study and mentoring.

“It’s an honor to be part of the growth and success that an institution like CNU is experiencing,” said Doug Culbert, Orthopedicspedic Service Line Administrator for Riverside Health System. “Riverside is extremely proud to be CNU’s sports medicine service provider of choice once again, and we look forward to continuing to keep their high-peRiverside Foundationorming student-athletes healthy from the training room to the classroom.”
