The college internship experience at Riverside is designed to give broad exposure to the inner workings of a health care system. It is a combination of mentoring, learning activities, hands-on training and project work.

The Riverside college internship offers:

  • Assignment to one department or one area of focus for the duration of up to 10 weeks
  • Supervision and mentoring from an experienced Riverside leader
  • Training and development meetings in an environment with other interns
  • Exposure to Riverside leaders in a variety of fields

Our internships are flexible and permit you to request concentration in specific areas in which you have high interest.

Qualifications

To qualify for a Riverside internship, you must be at least 18 years old and currently enrolled in college in good standing.

Unpaid nonclinical internships

These learning experiences are not directly related to patient care. They may include:

  • Business Management
  • Engineering
  • Finance
  • Health services research with adult and older adult populations
  • Hospital Administration
  • Human Resources
  • Information Systems
  • Marketing and Communications

Job Shadowing

Shadowing within Riverside Health offers pathways for students to experience, observe and connect with health care professionals. Shadowing is observation only. All requests for shadowing must be submitted to [email protected]. Students must be high school graduates and at least 18 years of age to participate in this program. 

Guidelines:

  • Complete the job shadowing application and submit it to the Education and Contracts Coordinator at the Riverside College of Health Sciences, 316 Main Street, Newport News VA 23601.
    • The application must also indicate the facility, department, start date, end date, and the Riverside health care professional that has agreed to accommodate the student for shadowing. 
    • It is the responsibility of the student to locate their own Riverside Health professional who has agreed to accommodate a student for their shadowing experience. Please utilize Riverside’s website, riversideonline.com. This website lists a directory of all Riverside facilities, as well as the contact information for each facility.
  • Non-refundable processing fee of $15.00 in the form of a check or money order made payable to RCHS.
  • Documentation of Tuberculosis immunity/TST within the past year.
  • Flu shot documentation.
  • COVID-19 vaccine information. 

All of these documents can be mailed to the Riverside College of Health Sciences at 316 Main Street, Newport News, VA 23601 or dropped off in the Student Services Department at Riverside College of Health Sciences. All incomplete submissions will be mailed back to the address listed on the job shadowing application and will not be accepted until everything is completed.

Once we have received all documents, the student will be sent an online safety training module to the e-mail address listed on the Job Shadowing Application. Once the student completes all requirements, he/she will receive an Approval Letter stating they are approved for shadowing. Job shadowing is an observation only experience that cannot be used in lieu of volunteering, an internship, externship, or clinical rotation.
