Riverside Smithfield Hospital Prepares for Opening in 2026 with Staffing Plan to Support Community Needs

As Riverside Smithfield Hospital (RSH) moves toward a January 2026 opening, a six-member Staffing Workgroup has projected a need for 190 full-time equivalent (FTE) team members. FTE incorporates the hours of both full-time and part-time staff. 

“Our plan was crafted with our patients at the center of every decision, with the goal of meeting the needs of our patients on day one,” said Jessica Macalino, RSH President and a Staffing Workgroup member. “Our team then will grow as the needs grow.” 

The FTE total covers all departments: Inpatient Services; Emergency Services and Protections; Surgical Services; Quality, Lab and Pharmacy; Imaging and Therapy Services; Facilities, Environmental Services and Nutrition Services; and Administration. 

With senior leadership positions already filled, RSH plans to hire department leadership, clinical and non-clinical team members from now through spring 2026, depending on the department. New team members will undergo about six to eight weeks of onboarding and orientation. 

The Staffing Workgroup carefully developed its plan based on multiple data sources, including projected patient and EMS volumes, nursing ratios, national staffing benchmarks, and information from nearby medical centers, as well as Riverside Doctors’ Hospital Williamsburg. Members thoroughly reviewed each position. The most FTE positions will be in the emergency room, which builds in extra team members to account for fluctuations in patient volume. 

RSH will conduct on-site job fairs and post all open positions online at riversideonline.com/careers. Hospital leaders also will communicate hiring timelines and open positions both internally and externally via intranet and social media channels. 

“By assessing our community needs, leveraging data and subject matter expertise and aligning with our mission, we designed a model that will ensure the right team members are in the right roles, and at the right time,” Macalino said. “We are looking forward to begin serving the Isle of Wight community and surrounding areas.”
