Williamsburg and Newport News, Va. – Strokes are the fifth leading cause of death in the U.S., experienced by nearly 800,000 people each year. Yet, up to 80% of strokes can be prevented.
In recognition of National Stroke Awareness Month, Riverside Health System is hosting two highly valuable and informative discussions on strokes that will give area residents information that could save their life or the life a loved one.
The sessions are free and open to the public.
May 9 Stroke Discussion at Riverside Doctors' Hospital Williamsburg
On Thursday, May 9 from 6 to 7 p.m. Riverside doctors will present “Stroke Sense: Causes and Symptoms, Intervention and Rehabilitation” at Riverside Doctors' Hospital Williamsburg.
During the session, Pankajavalli Ramakrishnan, M.D., Ph.D., a neurointerventional specialist at Riverside Neurovascular Specialists and Shawke Soueidan, M.D., of Riverside Neurology and Sleep Specialists will discuss what a stroke is, causes and symptoms, stroke treatments that are available and what is involved in the rehabilitation process.

May 14 Stroke Discussion at Christopher Newport University
On Tuesday, May 14 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. John N. Livingstone II, M.D., of Riverside Neurology Specialists will present “A New Look at Stroke - What we know about Prevention and Treatment” in Forbes Hall on the campus of Christopher Newport Universityin Newport News.
During his session, Dr. Livingstone will discuss why strokes are an urgent medical emergency, key risk factors that can be controlled, how to recognize a stroke in yourself and others, and why having a Comprehensive Stroke Center nearby can make a difference. Riverside Regional Medical Center (RRMC) is the peninsula’s only Comprehensive Stroke Center, offering a level of care to treat the most severe stroke cases. Capabilities at RRMC also include highly specialized neuro-interventional and surgical teams who can perform the kind of advanced treatment that can stop a stroke in progress with minimally-invasive procedures carried out entirely in the circulatory system.
In addition, Riverside Doctors' Hospital Williamsburg, Riverside Walter Reed Hospital, and Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital are designated by DNV as Primary Stroke Centers. This designation recognizes the presence of staff, technology and protocols needed to effectively diagnose and treat stroke cases.
The May stroke discussions sessions are part of “The Doctor is In” free speaker series, featuring Riverside providers and other health care experts who present pertinent, health-related topics geared toward those who live in the local community.
