Newport News, Va. - Patients recovering from medically complex illnesses and injuries now have a better place to heal thanks to a new partnership between Riverside Health System and Select Specialty Hospital-Hampton Roads.

Following the renovation of the fourth floor of the main hospital at Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News, Select Specialty Hospital-Hampton Roads recently opened as a critical illness recovery hospital.

The hospital – within the hospital – is designed to provide comprehensive, specialized care for medically complex patients that typically come from the ICU setting.

The care team’s expertise extends to patients with the following:

• Mechanical ventilator dependence
• Chronic Lung Disease (such as COPD and Emphysema)
• Neuromuscular disorders
• Acute respiratory ailments
• Pneumonia
• Post-surgical complications
• Spinal cord injuries
• Stroke
• Brain injuries
• Metabolic encephalopathy

The Select Specialty Hospital care team helps patients heal and prepares them to go down to their next level of care, which could include a rehabilitation unit or even home. On average, 70% of patients unable to breathe on their own in a traditional hospital are successfully weaned from a mechanical ventilator through the resource-intensive pulmonary program offered by Select.

The Critical Illness Recovery Hospital is required to meet the same quality standards and metrics as any other acute care hospital.
