Newport, News, Va. - In 1963, February was designated as American Heart Month as a way of encouraging people to join the battle against heart disease. Riverside Health System is continuing the fight by offering a series of free community lectures on heart health.
The four-part series kicked off Tuesday, Feb. 4, with a talk about the “Signs, Symptoms and Treatment of a Heart Attack.”
The remaining three lectures will focus on the following topics:
• Thursday, Feb. 13: “Diagnosis and Treatment of Peripheral Vascular Disease” by Sathish Mohan, M.D., Djurabek Babadjanov, M.D., and Carlos Torres-Medina, M.D.
• Tuesday, Feb. 18: “Understanding Congestive Heart Failure” by Alexandra Ward, M.D., and Heidi Roschinger, FNP.
• Tuesday, Feb. 25: “Treatment of Atrial Fibrillation” by Jamshid Alaeddini, M.D. and Kim Liebold, ANP.
Each lecture will start at 6 p.m. and will be held at Riverside Regional Medical Center, located at 500 J. Clyde Morris Blvd. Attendees should enter through the Annex Building Conference Center.
According to the American Heart Association, cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death of men and women in the United States and kills more people than all forms of cancer combined. Although science has advanced in many ways, unhealthy lifestyle choices combined with increasing obesity rates in both kids and adults means heart disease is still prevalent.
