The $25 million, 50-bed, 52,000-square-foot hospital in York County expected to open summer of 2019.

York County, Va. – A ceremonial beam raising on Thursday, Sept. 27 marked a milestone in the construction underway at the new Riverside Rehabilitation Hospital in York County – the placement of the hospital’s final steel beam.

Riverside Health System, in partnership with Select Medical, broke ground in April 2018 on the new 50-bed, 52,000-square-foot Riverside Rehabilitation Hospital that will relocate from Newport News. Located on Josephs Drive in York County off of Route 17, the $25 million facility is expected to open to the community in the summer of 2019.

“This building is an example of further service to our community,” Nancy Littlefield, DNP, Riverside Executive Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer, said at the ceremony. “How do we make sure we are doing everything we can for those who are facing a sudden illness, or an accident, or something that has altered their life’s journey, who will benefit from a rehab team that will get them to their highest level.”

The hospital, building on its legacy from its current Newport News location, will remain the only freestanding rehabilitation hospital in the entire Hampton Roads region, which it has served since 1986.

“To me it’s not just about the physical building,” said Ed Heckler, a physical therapist by trade who now serves as the Vice President of Riverside’s Lifelong Health and Aging Related Services division. “Riverside Rehabilitation Hospital represents an important part of the Riverside full-continuum of care, offering the highest and most intense level of physical rehabilitation available in our community.”

More than 200 Riverside team members will be employed on the new campus, serving an expected 800 patients or more per year.

The addition of the Riverside Rehabilitation Hospital marks the fourth health system facility to open in York County. Riverside currently operates three primary care practices in York County, including MD Express Yorktown, Patriot Primary Care and the recently opened Kiln Creek Primary Care, as well as Home Health & Hospice services.

The Riverside Rehabilitation Hospital specializes in working with patients who have suffered from a brain injury, stroke, spinal cord injury, neurological disorder, amputation, Orthopedicspedic condition or cancer.
