Riverside Health and Select Medical celebrated the completion of the new Riverside Rehabilitation Hospital in York County, Virginia with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Wednesday, July 17, 2019. The two health care entities entered into a joint venture agreement in March 2017 to operate an acute inpatient rehabilitation hospital as well as a critical illness recovery hospital to serve the coastal Virginia region.

Located at 250 Josephs Drive in Yorktown off of Route 17, the new 50-private-patient-room, 52,000 square foot Riverside Rehabilitation Hospital is scheduled to open to patients in August 2019 and will remain the only freestanding rehabilitation hospital in the entire Hampton Roads region.

“This location will make inpatient rehabilitation services even more accessible to people throughout the entire community, up into the Middle Peninsula and maybe even parts of the Northern Neck that have not typically been able to get easy access to those services,” said Bill Downey, President and CEO, Riverside Health. “You will see a state-of-the-art rehabilitation hospital that will provide outstanding care to residents of York County and the Peninsula.”

The new hospital will employ more than 200 administrative and clinical professionals with expertise in caring for patients with brain injury, stroke, spinal cord injury, neurological disease, amputation and orthopedic conditions.

“We formed the joint venture with Riverside Health with a commitment to work together to provide the highest quality care for Virginia’s coastal communities,” said Jeff Ruskan, President of the Rehabilitation Hospital Division for Select Medical. “This leading-edge rehabilitative environment, coupled with its clinical expertise and highly-certified team, sets the stage to deliver the most advanced rehabilitative care and treatment available in the county.”

The new hospital is led by interdisciplinary treatment teams that include a physiatrist, a physician board certified in physical medicine, rehabilitation nurses, physical, occupational and recreation therapists, speech language pathologists, neuropsychologists, dietitians, case managers and other support staff.

“Our clinical team combines evidence-based treatments, state-of-the-art equipment and compassion to help patients rebuild strength, mobility and independence to return to a quality life,” said Daniel Ballin, CEO of Riverside Rehabilitation Hospital. “We are honored to provide this level of world-class care to Yorktown and surrounding communities.”

A spacious 3,600-square-foot therapy gym at the hospital includes an overhead suspension walking track and an Activities of Daily Living suite features actual household equipment – full kitchen, bed, laundry room – to help prepare patients to return home following their rehabilitation. An outdoor ambulation path, sponsored by BayPort Credit Union, was constructed for patients to practice walking on various surfaces and elevations.

The addition of the Riverside Rehabilitation Hospital marks the fourth health system facility to open in York County. Riverside currently operates three primary care practices in Yorktown, including MD Express Yorktown, Patriot Primary Care and the recently opened Kiln Creek Primary Care, as well as Home Health & Hospice services.

Construction of the new hospital began in April 2018. Brasfield & Gorrie served as the general contractor of the project, with additional support from companies like the Yorktown-based C.A. Barrs Contractor, Inc.
