Dr. William Irvin of Riverside Health System will present “Current Advances in the Diagnosis, Evaluation and Management of Ovarian Cancer” at a free community lecture at Riverside Doctors’ Hospital Williamsburg on Thursday, Sept. 12, 2019.

Irvin, the director of Gynecologic Oncology and Minimally Invasive Surgery at Riverside Partners in Women’s Health Williamsburg, will review the latest symptoms and treatment for the most lethal of all the gynecologic neoplasms – ovarian cancer.

The event, part of “The Doctor Is In” speaker series, takes place at Riverside Doctors’ Hospital Williamsburg, located at 1500 Commonwealth Ave., in Conference Rooms A and B.

Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the presentation starts at 6 p.m.

Space is limited and registration is suggested. RSVP at riversideonline.com/doctalk.

After earning his medical degree and OB/GYN residency at the University of Virginia, Dr. Irvin completed fellowship training in gynecologic oncology at Loyola University Medical Center. He is board-certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology with additional certification in gynecologic oncology.

Ovarian cancer is a disease of women that begins in one or both of the ovaries. The American Cancer Society estimates that 20,000 women in the U.S. will receive a diagnosis of ovarian cancer each year and nearly 15,000 women will die from the disease. While ovarian cancer is not a common cancer, it is the fifth most common cause of cancer death among women.

Future community lecture events include “How Not to Have a Heart Attack,” presented by cardiologist Dr. Vasudev Ananthram on Thursday, Oct. 10; and “Menopausal Urogenital Health,” presented by Dr. Stacy Slat on Thursday, Nov. 14.
