Gun and Domestic Violence

Gun violence and domestic violence are critical public health issues that profoundly impact individuals, families, and communities. Survivors often face immediate physical and emotional trauma, with long-term effects such as chronic health conditions, depression, and often times, insomnia. These challenges highlight the importance of providing individuals and families with accessible medical and mental health resources to support their healing and address the long-term effects they may experience. By providing compassionate support and connecting individuals to the right resources, we can foster healing and work toward safer, healthier communities.

Mental Health

Mental health is something we all have. It inlcudes your emotional, psychological and social wellbeing. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others and make choices. Good mental health is essential at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood. Throughout your life, if you experience mental health issues, they can affect your thinking, mood and behavior. A mental illness is a health condition that impacts your brain. It affects the way you think, your emotions, your behaviors and your mood. Your mental illness may be serious if you have significant trouble completing projects and interacting with people at work, school, home and social settings. Help is available.

Opioid Misuse

Opioid misuse and overdose deaths have been a growing concern for decades, with origins tracing back to the 1990s. According to the National Institutes of Health, opioids include natural, semi-synthetic, and synthetic drugs, encompassing both prescription medications and illegal substances. While often prescribed for pain relief after major surgeries, these highly addictive medications can alter thinking and, without proper support and monitoring, may lead to addiction or what is known as “Opioid Use Disorder.” Providing education, resources, and compassionate care is essential to supporting individuals and families affected by opioid misuse.

Food Insecurity

Food insecurity affects many households, whether continuously or during certain times of the year, leaving families struggling to provide enough food for everyone. Without consistent access to nutritious meals, individuals face an increased risk of chronic health conditions like diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and stroke. Supporting those experiencing food insecurity through compassionate care, community resources, and access to healthy options is essential for promoting long-term health and well-being.

Chronic Health Conditions

Chronic diseases are long-lasting conditions that often require ongoing medical care and can limit daily activities, impacting millions of lives. Conditions like heart disease, cancer, and diabetes are among the leading causes of death and disability in the United States. Many chronic diseases are linked to lifestyle factors, including smoking, physical inactivity, poor nutrition, and excessive alcohol consumption. Providing support, education, and resources can empower individuals to make healthier choices and improve their quality of life.
