Diseases and Conditions

Diabetes is a disorder of metabolism—the way the body uses digested food for energy. We've provided information to help you understand how your body uses the foods you eat for energy and what happens to this process when you have diabetes.
In addition, we've included information about pre-diabetes, the types of diabetes and risk factors.
  • Pre-diabetes, a condition where your blood sugar is elevated, but not at diabetic levels.
  • Type 1 diabetes, an autoimmune disease that traditionally strikes adolescents and young people.
  • Type 2 diabetes, the most common form, usually starts in adults, but can develop in young people.
  • Gestational diabetes which affects pregnant women

Over the years, high blood glucose damages nerves and blood vessels, increasing your risk of complications such as heart disease, blindness, kidney disease, or nerve problems.  This section includes information about these and other complications of uncontrolled blood glucose.
