Contact lens solution pulled from market

Popular contact lens solution removed from market due to link to eye infections.

What happened? An outbreak of potentially blinding fungal eye infections earlier this year has been linked to Bausch & Lomb's ReNu with MoistureLoc contact lens solution.

Bausch & Lomb voluntarily halted shipments of the product after the Food and Drug Administration warned of an increased number of cases of fusarium keratitis, a fungal infection that damages the cornea. The manufacturer stopped shipments of ReNu multipurpose solutions to Singapore and Hong Kong following a similar spike in fungal keratitis there. In May 2006, Bausch & Lomb removed ReNu with MoistureLoc from the market worldwide.

Researchers have concluded that ReNu with MoistureLoc was the only contact lens solution associated with the infections, but it remains unclear how the product contributed to the problems.

Left untreated, fungal keratitis scars the cornea and may cause permanent vision loss. Severe damage may require a corneal transplant.

What does this mean to you? If you have existing supplies of ReNu with MoistureLoc solution, stop using the product immediately. Choose an alternative solution.

To reduce the risk of infection, always wash your hands with soap and water before handling your contact lenses. Wear your contact lenses only as directed, and follow the manufacturer's cleaning and storage guidelines. Also consider a "rub and rinse" cleaning method, which helps minimize contamination.

Remove your contact lenses immediately if you notice signs or symptoms of infection, including:

  • Eye redness or pain
  • Eye discharge or swelling
  • Tearing
  • Increased sensitivity to light
  • Blurred vision

If you're concerned about an eye infection, consult your doctor. Prompt antibiotic treatment can help prevent permanent eye damage.
