"When my sister fell and broke her hip and was almost simultaneously diagnosed with early-onset dementia, we were terribly concerned for her safety and well-being. Since her neurologist said that she could no longer live alone, the family researched over a dozen assisted living facilities because earlier experiments with her living with family members had not been successful, due to her independent nature and many years of living alone.
Our primary concern was to find a place that would enable her to retain as much of her independence as possible, while assuring she had the care she needed in a warm and busy atmosphere that would keep her mentally stimulated. Magnolia Manor at The Orchard was our first choice for the sister we love.
Jill White, Director of Marketing and Resident Services, led the initial site tour - and her enthusiasm was contagious. We learned that there were a relatively small number of residents. We noticed that the staff called each resident by name and was aware of what each person's interests and activities were. Other facilities were much larger and lacked that comfortable, family-like environment where "everybody knows your name."
The buildings and apartments are scrupulously clean. The central living room, library, activities room, dining room and "Country Kitchen" are homey and inviting. We were pleased that they offered a full continuum of care – three levels of assisted living and a safe and secure full-time memory unit for those who may need it in the future. There is also a skilled-nursing facility should that be required.
We were also pleased to see that residents at The Orchard are offered a wealth of on- and off-site activities for those who are raring to go. There are regular excursions to local concerts, restaurants, theater, etc. and many on-site activities like current events discussions, word games, visiting singers, and so on. Still, residents can feel comfortable just visiting with each other or having a catnap in the central living room. We also think the new "Guardian Angel" initiative is a great idea!
Our sister has been at The Orchard for about two months now and we continue to be very impressed with the caliber of the staff. Jill White is absolutely a wizard in her capacity to manage many tasks at once, yet never forget the smallest request from a resident or family member. She also has excellent and sensitive people skills that we have personally observed in her interactions with various family members.
Jill; Shantel Fauntleroy, the Marketing/Administrative Assistant; Martie Allman, the Activities Director, and Bonnie, her assistant; all of the CNAs; the Maintenance Personnel – in fact, everyone with whom we have dealt – all go the extra mile to be of help. In the early days, for example, when my sister was still a bit confused about where she was, we were able to get frequent updates on her acclimatization to the new surroundings from Jill and we could call the CNAs at night to ask them to check in on her. Even when they needed to be away from the office to be with other residents, they always responded very quickly to our requests.
No one at Magnolia Manor has ever said, "That's not my job." Instead, they'll make the effort to get you the answer or the assistance you need. As just one of many, many examples, on my sister's moving day, we needed to discard a large, damaged furniture item that would just not work in her apartment. Within an hour, Shantel and the Maintenance crew (Billy and Mike) managed to dispose of it for us and continued to work with us throughout the day to help get my sister's personal belongings in place in her new apartment.
The outstanding staff has contributed so much to making our sister's transition to a new home a great success. We could not be more pleased with our choice.
As you can tell, we heartily recommend The Orchard as a secure, warm and friendly environment for anyone who needs some extra help in daily living."
